Our Story

The Taj Mahal Shopping Center in Jamaica is a living tribute to the majestic masterpiece located in Agra, India. This beautiful mausoleum, a wonder of the world, was erected by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (1592-1666) as a symbol of his eternal love for his empress, Mumtaz Mahal. The shopping center, a representation of this timeless love, stands as a testament to the enduring power of beauty and romance.

In 1988, Gobind Chatani undertook a most ambitious and visionary project – to bring the beauty of Taj Mahal to the little fishing village of Ocho and surround it with a diverse array of stores and restaurants. From high-end boutiques to local crafts, and from fine dining to casual eateries, the center offers something for every taste and interest, all emulating the essence of timeless beauty and love for all to enjoy. With over 21 listings you will be sure to find your love!

Guests can expect a comprehensive and fair shopping experience. Since 1989, the Taj Mahal Shopping Centre has been an approved shopping destination for the Jamaican Tourist Board, and it is also highly recommended and guaranteed by all major cruise lines and hotels, ensuring a memorable visit.

"To achieve your goal, you MUST have courage."

These inspiring words were spoken by Gobind Chatani in 1986, as he embarked on the most ambitious project of his life: building a replica of one of the world’s greatest historical wonders – the Taj Mahal.

Originally commissioned in 1623 by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (read more in Taj Mahal History), the Taj Mahal stands as a symbol of eternal love and architectural splendor. Gobind set out to recreate its majesty in a form never before seen in Jamaica.

Gobind Chatani was born on January 13, 1940, in Hyderabad Sind (before the partition of India). In 1958, he joined his uncle’s business and later migrated to Kingston, Jamaica. A year after arriving, he visited Ocho Rios, a small fishing village at the time, and was so taken by its charm that he chose to make it his permanent home.

Over the next decade, as Jamaica’s in-bond industry grew, so did Gobind’s vision. What began as a single shop expanded into a chain of eight stores, including duty-free and souvenir outlets. These were located in iconic venues like the Playboy Club and Hilton Hotels, offering exclusive imports such as fine Chinaware, French perfumes, and gold jewelry (sold only to visitors under local regulations).

In 1968, Gobind married the love of his life, Kavita, and together they raised three wonderful children and now enjoy the blessings of two grandsons.

Gobind firmly believed that duty-free and visitor shopping were vital contributors to Jamaica’s foreign exchange. Guided by that belief, in 1986, he took a bold leap and acquired land to bring his dream to life: the Taj Mahal Shopping Centre. His vision was to revolutionize the tourist shopping experience by creating an elegant and unified space – a marketplace where international brands, local crafts, and fine cuisine came together in one breathtaking location.

The Taj Mahal Shopping Centre became a symbol of his core values – courage, resilience, determination, and hard work. Thanks to his unwavering dedication and integrity, today the centre thrives, housing over 20 stores ranging from upscale boutiques to artisanal shops, alongside fine dining and casual eateries. It stands as a testament to timeless beauty, love, and Jamaican hospitality.

Beyond business, Gobind was a dedicated member of the Ocho Rios and St. Ann communities. He worked closely with churches, schools, and civic groups to uplift and support local development. In recognition of his selfless service, he received numerous accolades, including The Citizen’s Award (2017) from the St. Ann Chamber of Commerce, and a Citation from Jamaica’s Ministry of Tourism for his exceptional contribution to the tourism sector (Merchant Category).
